LED Driver Solutions for General Illumination

The adoption of LED as a new light source in general lighting is proving to be a promising but very disruptive approach for the lighting industry.

The industry is quickly embracing the energy savings, light quality and novel features enabled by LED and at the same time is painfully realizing the limitations of conventional ballast and driver solutions originally developed for other light sources with remarkably different electrical, photometric and thermal behavior.

The end product performance can be further enhanced by the use of our light sensors (visible light or RGB), many outfitted with our BestEyeTM technology to closely match the human eye response to light. With BestEyeTM the fixture can therefore react to light changes and ensure increased power savings and longer LED life only if and when the consumer actually notices a change in ambient light.

- Active power factor correction IC that support a wide variety of single and multi-strings applications
- Can be used individually or in combination with a buck stage

Features
  • Unique self oscillating operation: the determination of the critical point does not require an auxiliary transformer winding for self oscillation in non-isolated applications (IPS401 only: the switch turn on point is set such that the minimum residual inductor stored energy is a programmable percentage of the peak stored energy)
  • An external voltage regulator is not necessary for the VCC pin which is maintained at 10V
  • The error amplifier compares feedback to a 0.5V reference allowing direct sensing across a current sense resistor (no amplification of the current sense Voltage is necessary)
  • The BYPASS pin RMS multiplier function normalizes the loop gain independent of VAC RMS voltages. This provides a more stable control loop and better PFC over a wide line voltage range.
